Prior to playing Arbutus Ridge, leave yourself a few extra minutes on arrival. The vista that awaits you from the clubhouse is to be truly admired. Beyond the golf course laid out below you, you'll see Saltspring Island (one of the group of Gulf Islands), the Cowichan Valley and inlets and coves of the Pacific Ocean. Well named for its namesake the arbutus tree, you too will have to be hearty to score well on this tricky layout. Hit a bucket of balls prior to play or just study that score cards and hit a few putts in preparation for a great day. The fairways of Arbutus Ridge are lined by fine retirement homes. Remember when you're shooting near the houses, please don't make any unexpected visits. There's just enough sand to keep you honest, just enough water to challenge your shot-making and long enough that you have to use both cheeks to hit the ball. While walking the gentle rolling-hilled course, don't be surprised if one of the local white tail deer decides to pay a visit. As a rule they won't laugh or giggle if you make a bad shot.

You'll start play with a bottle-neck feeling par four going downhill from
the starting tee. Two and three follow as short part fours, but plenty
of buckers jealously guard both greens. Number 4 is a testy par three
shooting back into a tall stand of trees, #5 has you starting off over
water with a nicely tucked away green. #6 slings with a gentle dogleg
right to a pillowy green. #7 is a brute. Three quarters of the par five
goes uphill with quality pacific coast rain forest lining the right side
of the fairway. " if you go out into the woods today, you're in for
a big surprise....."
Number 8 seems to easy a par four until you have to putt. The walk to
the par three ninth is worth a pause as you'll catch some great open ocean
scenery. The back nine start off with a par five that leans left off the
tee. Ten has you playing to a well-elevated green. Eleven is a relatively
short par five but a watery grave awaits near the green to the left. One
of the signature holes on the back nine has to be #17. Water water everywhere,
let's hope you don't put it into the drink. You'll understand why thirsty
balls have been called to visit the large horse-shaped water hazard guarding
#17 green. Number 18 is a charmer to close. Uphill, uphill, uphill and
then some more uphill. Get five on this last hole and have an extra large
pint at the end.

In getting to the club, make travel plans as if to drive to Duncan, about 45 minutes north of Victoria. You'll drive over the majestic Malahat and into Mill Bay. Just outside Mill Bay watch for signs directing you to Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. The club is about a 40 minute drive north of downtown Victoria.
