Gorge Vale is a golfer’s golf course. There’s something about
the course that seems to take you back in time to course that was built
around a true golfer’s dream. While you might feel like you are
stepping back in time, everything about this marvelous layout is state-of-the-art
modern. The course has gone through a major face-lift to improve drainage
and alignment.
Gorge Vale is one of three Victoria-area courses used as a regular stop
on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour. It’s got length; plenty
of sand, water, and the rolling nature of many of the fairways will test
your balance on your swing. The course dates back to 1930 under the design
of A.V. Macan.
When you talk about a course that has everything, few courses can says
they have a working cemetery in its midst. A fully function naval cemetery
awaits you along the right side of the 399 yard par four, 12th. It’s
uphill almost the entire hole and one of the area’s great golf holes.
Speaking of favourite holes, because of the fine layout of this course,
each hole has its own character and style. Try number four on for size.
Just a shade over 300 yards in length will tempt the heavy hitters to
try and reach this green with a drive. Like hungry alligators there are
several greenside bunkers just waiting to snatch your ball if you try
such a shot. Try and play a little too ‘cute’ and there’s
water in front. Smart money says hit one about 190 yards and snake in
a comfortable wedge for a birdie try on the two-tiered green.
Gorge Vale has something of a rarity with courses today. There's a full-length
practice area that allows you to hit shots off grass. A large chipping
area is adjacent to this practice area. If you plan to play Gorge Vale,
tighten up the laces a little extra on your shoes, take out the ball you
trust will fly the furthest and truest and bless your putter with a special
prayer. Gorge Vale Golf Club is a treasure.
