While in Victoria, you must play Highland Pacific. This wonderful
layout is the is the newest gem on the golfing map. The Highland Nine
opened for play in early June 2010. While the Pacific Nine opened about
one year earlier. The layout of the course is what makes this a terrific
challenge for all golfers, regardless of ability.
But be forewarned, once you play the course, you will be tempted to
try it again, just to have a second crack at one very interesting and
really challenging eighteen holes of play.
The vision for this golfing gem dates back to 1961, when Herb Plasterer
had a golfing vision for the 190 acres. Despite Herb's passing in 1985,
that commitment to maintain a user-friendly greenspace was carried on
by his family. The course, clubhouse and driving range has been eight
years in the making. That dream became reality in late 2008 with the
first nine holes open for play followed by the June 2010 opening of
the second nine.
Rocks- lakes - trees! Rocks - lakes - trees! Tee boxes - greens! Tee
boxes - greens! Wide open, undulating fairways are what you will find
nested among this remote feeling layout. Also get ready for elevation
changes .Whether it's your tee box or the green you approach, it seems
like you are constantly having to take into account the elevation change
to accommodate a club less or a club more.
On the Pacific Nine two holes present an exceptional challenge. Numbers
six and seven are back-to-back not long, but certainly testy. Number
six has a sharp dog leg right to a sharply elevated green and seven
may really fool you. It's a short par four, but placing your tee shot
and second shot will test you. Once on the seventh green, two putts
would certainly be welcomed.
On the Highland Nine, the exceptional holes are numbers; two, four,
five, six and nine. The approach to each of these holes is what testing.
Number five may be the hardest hole on the course if you happen to stray
to the right side of the hole. The double dogleg 6th is one of the finest
holes you will ever find. Follow the instructions on your score card
as to shot placement.
One other perhaps helpful hint - think twice about hitting driver on
the par fours. You are much better off to try and shape your shot to
a good location, than to blast away.
Highland Pacific has an outstanding practice are/driving range featuring
44 stalls. There's a fully stocked pro shop and restaurant. To sharpen
your game, you can call on three CPGA certified instructors - Doug
Hastie, Jung
Mi Ji and Mark
Callan.
One thing is almost certain, play this course once, and you will come
back time and again.
