For my money, one of the best
' learn-to-play' golf courses in the Victoria region is the municipally
owned and operated Juan de Fuca Golf Course. This course is operated by
the Colwood Parks and Recreation Department. In an abbreviated manner,
this fine little layout has everything a larger course might have. There's
water galore, a bit of sand and some darn trees that might get in the
way. The course is well drained and can be played year round. What sets
this starter course apart from others are the grass tees. Many other courses
of this type have artificial hitting mats at the tee boxes - yuk! The
shortest hole is in the 80 yard range with the longest going about 165
yd.
There's no booking of tee times. You show up, pay your money and get in
line to play. The golf course is part of a large sports and recreation
complex in the area with an ice and curling rink, swimming pool, public
library, tennis courts, soccer and softball fields, lawn bowling greens,
a world class track cycling velodrome and newly opened Bear Mountain Arena.
If this is your first time there, take a little extra time to check out
the velodrome or maybe watch a game of bowls that's very near by.
